This year, the program added 40 agents while keeping the original cohorts, who are now sixth-graders. It also helps some become more extroverted and self-confident. Some of the agents said they’ve noticed how their actions can provide hope for students who are struggling with bullying or issues with loved ones. “They can see the value behind it in all the small things they do.” “They learn how the small things make a difference in someone’s life they’re conscious about the acts they’re doing, which makes it really neat,” she said.
The missions have helped the agents as much as the school, Klinetobe said. “It really impacted this agent because the parent started crying.” One mom started crying, saying how much it meant to her and how much she needed it that day,” she said. “They handed the (flyers) out to people that were waiting to pick up their kids. Klinetobe said one agent had a memorable experience during a mission called “scattering of kindness,” in which positive flyers were made and shared with strangers. “I think it’s a happier place to be around here - there’s a lot more kindness going around, encouragement, just a better environment all-around,” she said.Īfter undergoing missions, agents have to document their experience, including a description of the mission, others’ reactions and how it made the agent feel. Horsley said the school environment has been more positive since the Secret Kindness Agents started their missions. “Now it’s in my happy folder if I have a bad day, I just go back and look at it.” “It made me happy enough that I put it on my wall until the end of the year,” she said. Favorite missions from some of the agents - whose names will not be used to preserve anonymity - include decorating fifth-grade classrooms with sticky notes that had positive messages on them and writing appreciative notes to teachers.įifth-grade band teacher Jessica Horsley, who received two of the notes, said they were unexpected and provided an uplifting moment that has stuck with her. The Secret Kindness Agents conduct one or two missions per month. “They cannot tell anybody they’re an agent except their parents. “They all have agent names: Cupcake McSprinkles, Unicorn, Panda, they’ve come up with some creative ones,” she said.
